Remediation Policy
Students must successfully complete all components of the family
medicine clerkship to pass the course. This entails receiving a
grade above 70% in each area.
Students will receive a failing grade and be required to repeat
the entire clerkship in the following situations:
- Failing
to receive a total score of 70% for the clerkship;
- Failing
the clinical portion of the clerkship; or
- Failing
more than one component of the clerkship.
Students will receive a grade of Incomplete and be given the opportunity
for remediation if they fail one area of the clerkship, assuming
that the student has passed the clinical evaluation and received
a total clerkship score above 70%. Remediation requirements
for each component of the clerkship are as follows:
- Examination:
Passing a make-up exam. This exam will consist of 50 questions
taken from the assigned readings. A score of 70% will be required
for passing. The student will be given two opportunities to pass
the make-up exam. If the student fails two make-up exams
then the course must be repeated.
- Presentation:
Successfully presenting a talk to a future clerkship group. A
score of 70% will be required for passing. The student will be
given two opportunities to successfully present the talk. If
the student fails two make-up talks then the course must be repeated.
If a student does not successfully complete the geriatric assessment
and presentation, then a make-up experience must be arranged with
Dr. Lawhorne. Successful completion of the geriatric assessment
visit is a requirement for passing the clerkship.
It is the responsibility of the student to complete remediation
requirements in a timely fashion. The specific time requirements
for remediation must be negotiated with the clerkship directors
at the time that the grade of Incomplete is given. If the
student does not successfully remediate the one component then
the entire course must be repeated. All remediation grades
(regardless of the score on the actual remediation) will be calculated
at 70% in determining the final numerical grade.
Any questions about the remediation policy will be directed to
both clerkship directors and the Vice-Chair for Predoctoral Education. |
