the process of normal labor and delivery.
a. Each
student will stay with one laboring patient from the beginning
of labor to the time of delivery.
b. The
student will observe the residents or private practitioners
during deliveries, particularly when these involve different
modes of assisted delivery.

Participate
as a principal and assistant in normal labor and delivery.
a. The
student will act as the principal obstetrician for a laboring
patient under the close supervision of a resident.
b. Participate
in at least one delivery as described.
c. The
student will write a full admission H&P and progress
notes on a laboring patient.

Recognize
antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum complications and their
prevention and evaluation.
a. The
student will make rounds on the antepartum and postpartum
floors as assigned. The residents will specify particular
duties.
b. The
student will attend all outpatient obstetrical patient
clinics.
c. The
student will assist the residents in the early labor lounge
to determine which patient should be admitted in labor.

Take
a complete history from an obstetrical and gynecological patient.
a. The
student will interview patients in a variety of settings
such as the outpatient Ob/Gyn Clinic and Labor & Delivery.
b. The
student will receive feedback from residents and attendings
regarding their interview skills.

Recognize
and manage common problems in ambulatory obstetrics and gynecologic
patients including breast care, contraception, and preventive
health care for women. Identify patients at high risk
following a complete history and physical exam.
a. The
student will learn to manage common medical complications
in pregnancy such as hypertension, asthma, diabetes mellitus,
and seizures.
b. Perform
a complete breast exam.
c. The
student should be able t specify appropriate preventive health
care measures for different populations of women. Examples
include mammography, pap smears, and bone density studies.
d. The
student should be familiar with various types of contraception.

Perform
general and pelvic examinations on normal and abnormal obstetric/
gynecologic patients including pap smears and vaginal discharge
microscopy.
a. The
student will obtain basic understanding of the pelvic examination
at the time of scheduled of Professional Patient Program.
b. Each
student will perform several pap smears during the clerkship.
c. Each
student should make a wet prep of a vaginal discharge from
at least two patients complaining of symptoms consistent
with vaginitis. The
student should be able to recognize microscopically the
common causes of vaginitis.

Recognize
the clinical features of the common gynecologic disorders and
their prevention.
a. Each
student should become adept at taking a complete gynecologic
history and performing a basic physical examination including
a pelvic and rectal examination.
b. Each
student should be able to use the information derived from
the history and physical to generate a differential diagnosis
of the patient’s problem.
c. Each
student should be able to describe the primary modes of
therapy for the common gynecologic disorders.

Understand
the principles of and participate in common major/minor gynecologic
operations.
a. Each
student should serve as a first or second assistant where
deemed appropriate in as many minor/major gynecologic operations
as possible.
b. The
student should become familiar with the appropriate writing
of preoperative and postoperative orders for patients that
are undergoing gynecologic surgery.

Appreciate
the moral and ethical aspects of obstetrics and gynecology
and the relationship of obstetrics and gynecology to other
medical disciplines. The student should participate
in a structured conference which deals with the major problems
inherent in human reproduction.

Prepare
case presentations of obstetrics and/or gynecologic patients
supported by appropriate literature review.
a. Two
oral/typed presentations to an assigned faculty member. The
presentation should be based upon a patient the student
has personally evaluated.
-
Recognize
and be familiar with procedures common in the Ob/Gyn field.
a. Each
student will present a brief (5 minute) discussion about
one procedure from a list assigned on the first day of the
rotation.
