(PDF)
GOAL: The major goal of the surgery clerkship
is to assure that all students acquire the skills and knowledge
that all physicians need to know in order to manage patients with
a number of conditions commonly treated by surgeons.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
By the end of the General Surgery Clerkship, medical students
will be able to:
-
understand the diagnosis and treatment of common surgical
diseases and disorders.
-
understand
the role of the surgeon in the health-care management team.
-
recognize when referral to a surgeon or consultation is indicated.
-
establish
rapport with patients, their families, and other members of
the patient-care management team.
-
elicit a complete medical
history by exploring all symptoms and relevant information. Reports
should be chronological, clear, concise, complete, and organized,
and include thorough review of systems.
-
perform a complete
physical exam with special attention to patients’ area of complaint
by identifying pertinent findings, pursuing abnormal findings,
using inspection, percussion, palpation, and auscultation. Know
the range of normal variation of physical findings.
-
Formulate
an extensive differential diagnosis proceeding from most likely
to rare.
-
recommend appropriate diagnostic studies with an understanding
of test sensitivity, specificity, reliability, accuracy, utility,
risks, and expected value of information; and select tests
in a cost-effective manner.
-
prioritize treatment modalities,
evaluate treatment efficacy, and make value judgments with
an understanding of risks, benefits, and alternate therapy.
-
participate
in operative procedures after appropriate review of anatomy,
physiology, and pharmacology appropriate to the surgical disease. The
student will demonstrate clear understanding of the principles
of sterile technique.
-
construct plans for
post-operative management, both immediate and long term, and
the appropriate role of rehabilitation
Conduct and Dress Code for Clinical Activities
A neat, clean personal appearance promotes effective, productive
interaction between you and your patients and professional staff.
Please be sensitive to the expectations for personal appearance
and appropriate behavior placed upon you as a medical student.
You are responsible to respect your professional obligations
to your patients, institutions, and the profession of medicine.
Scrub suits are NOT to be worn out of the Surgery Department.
When leaving for short periods and plan on returning for a case,
put on a long lab coat over your scrub suit and then CHANGE INTO
A NEW SCRUB SUIT before going back to the OR. The OR staff reserves
the right to correct your surgical or sterile technique if necessary
as it is their responsibility that correct technique be maintained
in the Surgery Department.
Absences
Clerkships provide both education and supervised experiences
in a variety of medical specialties. For this to occur, you must
attend all scheduled activities during each clerkship. Because
you are a professional in training, you are expected to conduct
yourself professionally at all times.
Absences from a scheduled clerkship activity due to personal
illness or a family crisis will be handled individually by the
clerkship director or his/her designee. Students
are responsible for notifying their preceptor and the specific clerkship office
immediately of the reason for absence. If the absence exceeds
two days, students must (a) submit a statement from their physician
and (b) speak directly to the clerkship director (or designee)
to arrange to make up lost time.
Absences for any other reason (e.g., a conference or to attend
a family function) will be considered unexcused, unless written
approval is received from the clerkship director at least 30
days prior to the event causing the absence. In any case, students
must make up all time lost. An unexcused absence may be reflected
unfavorably on the student’s written record and may adversely affect their clerkship
grade. Until the time missed is made up, the grade may
be recorded as an Incomplete.
For official holidays, students are required to follow the holiday
schedule of the hospital, clinic, or practitioner's office to
which they are assigned unless specifically instructed otherwise
by the clerkship director.
(This may be a good time to review the Medical School’s Student
Policy Guide as regards Professionalism and Code of Conduct and
other pertinent topics for medical student education. The
